25Several weeks ago there were 8-10 monarch larvae in my butterfly milkweed. Yesterday we saw a monarch butterfly. Today I discovered 5 more larvae in instar 1 and 2. I realize that the appearance of the butterfly and the larvae is just coincidence. But is the appearance of 5 more larvae 2-3 weeks after the other larvae have completed their cycle on the same bush unusual? I am located in Cincinnati, Ohio.
27How many times a year do the Florida Monarchs reproduce and what is their life span?
31This spring near Orr, Minnesota a "wave" of Monarchs arrived on May 25. They were very common for one or two weeks, but then became rare. (I recorded 2 on my 4th of July count). What happens to them, do they move on elsewhere?
36Is there a general idea of a date that the monarchs will be in Tennessee during their fall migration? If so, when?
50I live 20 miles north of San Antonio, Texas. The butterflies have been here for the last week. I thought that we don't usually see the butterflies through here until late Aug, early Sept. Are they early this year and, if they are, why are they early?
64In Minnesota, when can you expect to no longer find eggs and/or caterpillars? When do the butterflies begin to migrate?
66Is there a safe way to tag butterflies? And do monarchs return to the same place of birth?
70We have read it takes four generations to return from Mexico hibernation grounds to Canada. We live in Illinois -- do our monarchs still take this many generations, and do you know a general geographical path they would take (where the different generations would change over, etc.)?
103How do Monarch Butterflies know to migrate through the same areas each year? My Mom lives in Fonda, IA and every year (for the last 3 years) around this time, one of her trees is filled with migrating Monarch butterflies for a day or two. What makes them come to the same tree every year? We do love them!
